History of Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is surrounded by a lake called the Sarovar, which contains the sacred stream Amrit. The lake has a miraculous place called Dukha Bhanjani Bedi. Duni Chand Khatri, a wealthy zamindar of Patti town, was associated with this legendary Beri, who had five daughters.

New city built in Amritsar

One day he asked them who gives them food. The four daughters, the eldest among them, replied that their father was their benefactor or patron and it was he who gave them their food. The youngest daughter named Rajni said that it is God who keeps all living beings alive. Duni Chand got angry on hearing this and gave the girl in marriage to a leper. She loved and cared for her husband.

At that time Guru Ram Das Ji was building a new city in Amritsar. Rajini brought her husband to Amritsar. He meets the Guru’s devotees, who take pity on Rajini’s condition and offer him a room. He assigned the task of cooking food in the communal kitchen. She used to bring her husband with her when she came to attend her work. She used to sit her husband under the shade of a tree and enter the kitchen.

The miraculous power of pond water

One day she left her husband under a hedge tree. Her husband, notices that some crows there are diving into the water of the pond and they are changing from black to white. Then he realized that it was no ordinary water. He went to the front of the pond and dived into the water. He was healed and no longer a leper and came again and sat under that tree. Rajni could not identify him.

Dukha Bhanjani Bedi:

The young man trusted him and the couple went to tell Guru Ram Das Ji about the pond. After hearing this, Guru Ram Das Ji told this to the head priest of the temple, Baba Buddha Ji. He said that this pond was the place where Guru Amar Das Ji was waiting before. As the tree relieves pain and suffering, it was known as ‘Dukha Bhanjani Bedi’.
